The homeowners could see the idea before the fence was ordered
Before ordering, Sunrise showed the homeowners a rendering of the proposed cedargrain fence on their own property photograph. It gave them a useful way to judge the colour, height and privacy effect before committing to the material.
A finished terrace with nothing closing it in
The clients had invested in the hardscape — a new retaining wall, a full paver terrace, room for dining and lounging. What they did not have was privacy. The existing stockade fence had failed: leaning, weathered and gapped, with the neighbouring house visible straight through it from every seat on the patio.
There was a second constraint. The fence had to run along the upper terrace, above the new wall, where the grade changes and where any inconsistency in post height would be visible along the entire length of the run from below.
Six feet of cedargrain PVC, set to a level line
Cedargrain PVC was the right material here for a specific reason: the property is a stone-and-paver composition, and a flat white vinyl fence would have read as plastic against it. The cedargrain finish carries wood tone and visible grain, so the boundary reads as a warm material rather than a manufactured panel — without the staining, warping and replacement cycle that put the original stockade fence out of service.
At six feet the line sits high enough to close the sightline to the neighbouring house from a seated position on the terrace, which was the actual test the homeowners cared about.
What the detailing actually required
- Rendering before ordering. The proposed fence was rendered onto the homeowners' own photograph so colour and height were confirmed on the property rather than from a sample board.
- Line above the wall. Posts set along the upper terrace to hold a consistent top line across changing grade — the detail most visible from the patio below.
- Full-privacy panels. Tongue-and-groove boards with no gaps, so the barrier performs at the seated sightline and not only standing.
- Cedargrain finish. Wood tone and grain texture chosen against the paver and block palette already on site.
- Corner returns. The run carried around the shed side of the property so the enclosure closes rather than stopping short.
