This Southampton installation was completed in collaboration with a custom home builder we have worked with on multiple projects. The fence was treated as part of the property's overall design rather than as an afterthought.

It combines an open cedar picket layout, substantial capped posts and custom X-braced double gates with black architectural hardware. The result defines the property line without the visual weight of a solid privacy wall.

This is representative of our broader cedar and wood fencing work across Suffolk County and the East End.

A fence that had to hold its own against the house

On a custom-home project the fence is usually the last thing considered and the first thing a visitor sees. Here it was specified alongside everything else.

The property needed a boundary that read as deliberate architecture from the road, without closing the frontage in. A solid privacy fence would have done the opposite.

Open pickets, heavy posts, and a gate worth looking at

Narrow vertical cedar pickets on horizontal framing rails give the fence its openness — you see through it to the lawn and the house behind, which is the point on a property this size.

The posts are heavier than the pickets need structurally. That is deliberate: substantial capped posts at regular intervals set a rhythm along the run and give the fence architectural weight rather than letting it read as a garden fence.

The double gate is the focal point. X bracing in both leaves handles the width and gives the entrance something to look at, and the black hardware is a deliberate contrast against natural cedar rather than an attempt to disappear.

The details that carry it

Natural cedar. Left to weather rather than finished to hide the material.

Narrow vertical pickets. An open layout that defines the line without blocking the view.

Substantial capped posts. Heavier than structurally required, set for architectural rhythm.

Horizontal framing rails. Carrying long runs in alignment across the frontage.

Custom X-braced double gates. Wider access, and bracing that does the work at that span.

Black architectural hardware. Deliberate contrast against the cedar.
