A custom pressure-treated wood enclosure designed to secure a residential swimming pool while preserving the broad views and open character of this North Fork property.
A natural-looking pool barrier for an open property
The homeowners wanted to enclose their swimming pool without surrounding the yard with a solid privacy fence. Sunrise custom-built a pressure-treated post and rail system with black welded wire, creating a durable pool barrier that maintains visibility across the property.
The horizontal rails complement the property's rural North Fork setting, while the dark wire visually recedes from a distance. Every section was laid out around the existing pool, hardscape, utilities and changing grades.

The Challenge
Meeting pool code without compartmentalising an open property
An open North Fork property where the appeal is the sweep of the land. Pool code required a barrier; the homeowners did not want the yard chopped into compartments to get one.
Anything tall or solid would have worked against the single thing that makes the property what it is.
The Solution
Post and rail with wire — the language the land already speaks
Post and rail with black welded-wire infill — the fencing vocabulary this part of the North Fork already speaks. It satisfies pool code while reading as part of the landscape rather than an addition to it.
The black wire is the reason it works. It holds the barrier requirement and effectively vanishes at any distance, leaving only the rail line.
Construction Highlights
What the detailing actually required
Rail lines. Run consistently across changing grade so the horizontal reads clean from every angle.
Wire tension. Set panel by panel; slack wire is what makes this style look agricultural in the wrong way.
Integrated gates. Built into the rail runs so the line continues visually through each opening.
Code compliance. Spacing and gate hardware set to pool-barrier requirements throughout.
Craft & Field Construction
Built to the property, not forced into prefabricated panels
The open black wire preserves clear views across the pool and yard, but the finished enclosure still had to be built around the actual site. Posts, rails, corners and gates were field-fitted to the layout rather than forcing the property into prefabricated fence panels.
Long runs make inconsistencies easy to see, so the rails were aligned carefully through corners and grade changes and the wire was secured continuously. The custom gates carry the same pressure-treated framework and black wire as the surrounding fence, supported by substantial posts and hardware selected for dependable everyday use.

I did not come up with this design. The customer came to me with a photo found online and asked if I could build it. They were not the only one — that same style came across my desk more than once that week, so it must have been making the rounds on the internet.
That happens a fair amount. Somebody sees something they like and wants it on their own property. Our part was making it work as a pool barrier on this piece of land, and building it to stand up.
