This Bay Shore installation was built at the homeowner's direction to achieve the specific open-board look she wanted for the property.

We built the fence using cedar horizontal boards on substantial 5×5 pressure-treated posts. The open three-rail design establishes a clear property boundary while preserving views across the lawn and mature landscaping.

The result is a traditional, understated fence that complements the scale and character of the property rather than visually enclosing it — the same thinking behind our other custom wood and cedar fencing across Suffolk County.

The homeowner brought us the design

This one did not start with a problem to solve. It started with a look the homeowner already wanted — an open board fence, three rails, cedar, running the length of a large property.

The work was in building that look properly. Getting the structure right underneath a fence meant to look light, and carrying the same appearance across a driveway opening wide enough to need a double gate.

The driveway entrance was designed as part of the fence rather than treated as an afterthought. We increased the post size to heavy 8×8 pressure-treated gate posts and built a matching double gate that continues the three-rail appearance across the driveway.

Diagonal bracing provides structure to the larger gate leaves, while agricultural-style gate hardware complements the straightforward, traditional character of the fence.

What the detailing actually required

Cedar boards. Horizontal cedar boards in a three-rail open configuration give the fence its colour and character.

5×5 line posts. Pressure-treated posts sized to carry the length of the run and to read as substantial from the road.

8×8 gate posts. Heavy pressure-treated posts used to support the custom double driveway gate.

Matching gate leaves. The three-rail line carries across the drive rather than stopping at it.

Diagonal bracing. Structure in both leaves of the larger gate.

Agricultural-style hardware. Suited to the plain, traditional character of the fence.

Cedar is used for the horizontal boards. The structural line posts and gate posts are pressure-treated.
