Custom Cedar That Belongs With the Property

The homeowners had seen a photo of another custom cedar fence we built and asked whether the character of that design could be adapted to their Bellport Village home.

The answer was not to copy the earlier fence dimension for dimension. We adjusted the proportions and layout to suit this backyard, while carrying forward the substantial capped posts, broad horizontal rails, vertical cedar pickets and custom-built gates that gave the original design its character.

The Design Story

A Sunrise design, adapted for a second property

Before the Bellport project, Sunrise built the 42-inch custom cedar fence shown here to another homeowner’s specifications. Rob modified that design around the customer’s needs rather than treating it as a stock fence style.

The Bellport homeowners later saw a photograph of this installation and liked its character. Their fence was not a duplicate. It became a second custom interpretation, with the proportions and layout worked out specifically for their own backyard.

Preserve what they loved without copying a fence built for someone else

The earlier Sunrise fence had been built around another homeowner’s specifications. Bellport presented a different house, backyard, landscape and family use, so copying the original dimensions would have missed the point.

The challenge was to identify what gave the earlier design its character — the open picket rhythm, substantial cedar framing, capped posts and custom gate work — and then make those elements feel natural on this property.

Keep the character of the original. Build it for Bellport.

We kept the visual language of the earlier Sunrise design — substantial cedar posts, strong horizontal rails, closely spaced vertical pickets and traditionally detailed gates — while changing the proportions and layout specifically for Bellport.

The result feels less like a borrowed design and more like a fence that belongs to this house, this landscape and the way the family uses the yard.

What the detailing actually required

White cedar construction. The natural material brings warmth and variation that work especially well with the home’s traditional exterior and mature landscape.

Proportions. The design was adapted to this property rather than reproduced dimension-for-dimension from the earlier Sunrise installation.

Custom gates. The gates carry the same cedar detailing as the surrounding fence, with diagonal bracing and contrasting black hardware.

Post detailing. Substantial capped posts give the fence enough visual weight to balance the broad horizontal rails and vertical pickets.

Layout. The fence runs and gate locations were planned around the property and the way the family needed the backyard to function.

Project note: this installation was designed around the homeowner’s specific property and family needs — in part as a precaution and to keep a pet out of the pool area. The backyard’s perimeter fencing serves as the property’s primary enclosure. Although a swimming pool is visible in the project photography, this particular fence was not designed or represented as a code-compliant swimming-pool barrier.
