A standard form, built to order

Post and rail is one of the most familiar fences on the East End. This one was built for the property rather than assembled from a stock system.

We built this fence for the property using pressure-treated lumber, 6x6 posts, and rails mortised into the posts rather than face-mounted. The tops of the posts were rounded off. The fence and its details were made specifically for this job.

It sits in the same family as our other post and rail and board fencing, and more broadly our wood and cedar work.

The Challenge

The familiar form, built to order

Post and rail is the default boundary fence on properties like this one. Stock systems come in fixed sizes, with rails fixed to the face of the post and square-cut post tops — which is the right answer on plenty of jobs, and the wrong one here.

The customer wanted the traditional form with the construction and detailing to match the house.

The Solution

Mortised construction on 6x6 posts

We built the fence in pressure-treated lumber on 6x6 posts — heavier than the stock post most post and rail is built on.

The rails are mortised through the posts rather than screwed to the face. It is more work at the post and it is the difference between a fence that looks assembled and one that looks made. The post tops were rounded off rather than left square.
